2011 Cherry Blossom Festival Dedicated to Japan – National Cherry Blossom Festival

The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a spring celebration in Washington, D.C., commemorating the March 27, 1912, gift of Japanese cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington. Mayor Ozaki donated the trees in an effort to enhance the growing friendship between the United States and Japan and also celebrate the continued close relationship between the two nations

Did you know:
1) A cherry blossom is the flower of the cherry trees known as sakura (桜 or 櫻; さくら). In English, “sakura” refers to the Japanese flowering cherry, Cherry fruit (桜んぼ sakuranbo) comes from another species of tree.

2) Did you know Balboa Park of San Diego has 2,000 cherry blossom trees that blossom in mid to late March.
